Defining and Measuring Quality in Teaching and Learning
Dr Diane Phillips and Fiona Dunlop - 27 January

This training day will explore the subject of quality in the classroom, from both an 'internal' and 'external' perspective. The session looks at the following questions: What do we mean by "quality"? What is good teaching? How do we recognise when successful learning is taking place? Can we measure teaching and learning? Which criteria might be useful? By reviewing recordings of teachers in action we can compare our views about good practice. This training day also explores the steps academic managers can take to achieve and maintain quality: Making expectations and standards clear; giving guidance and support; providing useful feedback; raising self-awareness; and providing targeted CPD.

Making the Change - from Expert to Manager
Veronica Broomes - 28 January

Many in education are expert at what they do. They impart specialist knowledge to a range of learners with a diversity of learning styles and are experts at classroom management. However, when such experts are promoted, they find they require much more than expert knowledge to manage teams, budgets and develop their personal brand in their senior role. This workshop is designed to equip these specialists with skills and techniques to reflect a range of management styles, develop strategies for increased effectiveness in managing time and people and create personal action plans to grow successful teams.

Project Management: introducing PRINCE 2 methodology
Helen Mattacott - 29 January

A project is essentially a task that requires inputs from several contributors, has clear objectives, specified start and finish dates and generally some limited resource within which to accomplish this.

This session will look at how to successfully deliver a project using PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) - the current version of a project management methodology used in UK Government, private and public sector organisations. It is designed to be applied flexibly so that the same principles of good practice can be applied to a small project or to one costing millions of pounds.

Making CPD Work
Keith Harding - Friday 26th February

Continuing Professional Development is becoming increasingly important, providing the bridge between qualifications as well as marking out the route to improved job performance and satisfaction. But what constitutes effective CPD? Who can benefit from it, and what are the factors that work against its effectiveness? This session looks at different ways in which a CPD programme can be beneficial for all staff and management, whilst at the same time not being inefficient in terms of time or money. The session is aimed at school and academic managers, teachers and administrative staff, and is relevant to both private sector and state sector institutions.
